Diabetes Diagnosis Calculator

Blood glucose

This diabetes diagnosis calculator determines whether a person's blood sugar makes them diabetic, prediabetic, or within normal ranges.

Diabetes is a condition characterized by sustained elevated blood sugar levels.

Prediabetes is a condition characterized by higher than normal blood sugar but not high enough to diagnose diabetes. Prediabetes is a precursor to diabetes and usually indicates increased risk for developing type II diabetes and heart disease and stroke.

This calculator is given just so that you can know what levels makes a person diabetic, prediabetic, or within normal ranges. It is not meant to be diagnostic because in order to diagnose diabetes, 2 or more readings on separate occasions are needed. This is just a guide to show what blood sugar would put a person in which category.

So first option is the fasting blood sugar. A fasting blood sugar equal to or greater than 126 mg/dL (7 mmol/L) is indicative of diabetes. A fasting blood sugar between 100 mg/dL and 125 mg/dL is indicative of prediabetes. A fasting blood sugar less than 100 mg/dL is normal.

Fasting Blood Sugar
Diabetes ≥  126 mg/dL
Prediabetes 100 - 125 mg/dL
Normal < 100 mg/dL

Another option is blood sugar after a 75-gram oral glucose tolerance test (the most used type of OGTT).

If the blood sugar is greater than 200 mg/dL after the 75-gram oral glucose tolerance test, this is indicative of diabetes. If the blood sugar is between 140 mg/dL and 199 mg/dL, this is indicative prediabetes. If the blood sugar is less than 140 mg/dL, this is normal.

If the blood sugar is greater than 140 mg/dL after the 75-gram oral glucose tolerance test, this is indicative of diabetes.

75-gram Oral Glucose Tolerance Test
1 hour after test Diabetes: ≥ 200 mg/dL

Prediabetes: 140 - 199 mg/dL

Normal: < 140 mg/dL
2 hours after test Diabetes: > 140 mg/dL

Another option is any random blood sugar. If any random blood sugar is greater than 200 mg/dL, this is indicative of diabetes.

Another option is the hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) value. A hemoglobin A1c greater than or equal to 6.5% is indicative of diabetes. An HbA1c value between 5.7% and 6.4% is indicative of prediabetes. A HbA1c value less than 5.7% is normal.

Hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c)
Diabetes ≥ 6.5%
Prediabetes 5.7% - 6.4%
Normal < 5.7%

The calculator gives the option of entering in the blood sugar in milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL) or in millimoles per liter (mmol/L).

To use this calculator, a user simply enters in the blood sugar, selects the condition (such as fasting blood sugar, any random blood sugar, etc.) and then presses "Submit" button. The resultant value will automatically be computed and shown.

Again, this calculator should not be used for definitive diagnostic purposes but rather serves as a guideline for seeing which category blood sugar ranges fall under. and
